Susquehanna - PA/NYCC

The Snyder County Regional Engagement Center (REC) has provided local youth with recreational and after-school opportunities, such as academic tutoring, drop-in recreation hours and a teen mentoring group. The REC provides kids with a safe space to spend after school and weekend hours, and has plans to grow its educational offerings. The REC's overall goal is to provide easily accessible positive social opportunities to local youth. These goals emerged after several studies reported that Snyder County youth ranked higher than the state average in both access to and use of drugs or alcohol, as well as having participated in or thinking that antisocial behavior is okay. A regional survey done by United Way Teen Impact Council survey found a great need for afterschool programming in Snyder County. Responses highlighted gaps in available and accessible programing in the community. For the final year of VISTA project, the Susquehanna University Youth Engagement AmeriCorps VISTA will focus on solidifying and sustaining the REC's partnership with Susquehanna University. Through the university, the VISTA will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing a student volunteer program. The year 3 VISTA will also focus on solidifying the capacity of the REC to maintain these systems and programs independently from VISTA support by collaborating with already-established community partners, working to create new partnerships, training volunteers to assume leadership of the Teen Leadership Club, creating a manual for future leaders of REC programs and finally, assisting with fundraising activities.PA/NYCC VISTAs are part of a VISTA cohort of 40 members placed at higher ed. institutions across the PA and NY to build campus-community partnerships. Professional development opportunities, including specialized workshops and retreats, and support to the VISTA cohort will be provided throughout the year of service.
